Brene Browns advice on stop leading from control and compliance
Brene Browns advice on stop leading from control and complianceBrene Browns advice on stop leading from control and complianceBad bosses, whether of leid they intend to do it, are ineffective leaders who rule through fear and power. They are sticklers about getting it done their way. They do not seek input from their colleagues. Tasks are done because they say so, not because of any higher purpose to the teams mission. This management style builds confusion and resentment from colleagues who work in fear of getting it wrong. But in a new excerpt for her book Dare to Lead, social scientist Dr. Bren Brown argues that there is a better way. Through her years of research on the psychology of shame and the power of vulnerability, she has made a career out of teaching us how to rewrite the untrue stories we tell ourselves. For manager to be better leaders, they need to learn how to cultivate commitment and shared purpose through their actions. Heres how Brown suggests it can be doneHow to si gnal shared purpose in your actionsWhen leaders are working under an ideology of compliance and control, work is reduced to tasks devoid of context. These command-and-control bosses motivate their employees through the the fear of getting caught doing it wrong, so that employees worry more about getting it done exactly how the boss wants it, than about how this task fits into the wider mission. Employees abdicate any autonomy they have.Brown uses an example from her own job as an example of this compliant behavior.Without giving clear direction about how she wanted her colleagues Murdoch and Barrett to facilitate a workshop, Brown said she ends up disappointed with the result. Next time, she spells out what she wants her colleagues to do, and her colleague answers,Sure. What does done look like? This question of what does done look like? is an improvement from no communication about expectations over work, but Brown says the results get better when the question becomes Lets paint don e. That way, both parties feel welcome to give input about any ideas or concerns they have about a problem. It unearths stealth expectations and unsaid intentions, and it gives the people who are charged with the task tons of color and context. It fosters curiosity, learning, collaboration, reality-checking, and ultimately success, Brown said. We want people to share our commitment to purpose and mission, not to comply because theyre afraid not to. Thats exhausting and unsustainable for everyone.By inviting employees input into a decision, it reminds employees and employers that they are not enemies on opposite sides they are colleagues who have a shared purpose. As leadership expert Randy Conley once told Ladders, being transparent and open about collaboration helps employees build trust with one anotherIf you involve your team in not just hiring decisions, but also in the strategies youre developing as a team, the action plans youre focused on, it creates much more ownership. Theyr e invested in it. They will be less likely to work against your plans if theyve had a hand informing them.

This is how dangerous denial is for your mental health
This is how dangerous denial is for your mental healthThis is how dangerous denial is for your mental healthAlmost all of us have had experiences so uncomfortable or traumatizing that we do everything in our power to push the memories or feelings aside. Or maybe there is an everyday reality we live with that feels too impossible to cope with, so we pretend it doesnt exist, and that dealing with it is not our responsibility. That is denial. The state of denial usually feels much mora comfortable than confronting difficult feelings or circumstances. But anyone in the mental health field will tell you that living in denial for too long will only backfire. Denial may feel easier, but it actually only intensifies whatever challenging feelings you are dealing with, making them mora difficult to move on from. Can Denial Ever Be Helpful? Is there ever an amount of denial that is acceptable? Could it, in some circumstances, be protective and possibly useful as you navigate troubled times in your life?Rachel ONeill, Ph.D., professional clinical counselor andTalkspace therapist, says that theremaybe circumstances where this is the case, but denial is only every helpful in very limited quantities and lengths of time.Denial is a defense mechanism and it exists to help us cope with difficult situations, ONeill explains. Its never really helpful per se, because, eventually, an individual will need to face the reality of their situation. However, in some particular instances liketraumatizing events, denial may allow someone to keep a distance from the trauma until they are able to tackle it. Even then, denial is only helpful for very brief periods. Eventually, it becomes necessary to work on finding the space to accept the circumstances of the situation, says ONeill. The Problem With Living in DenialSo whats so problematic about denial, and why should we all learn how to confront and accept the most difficult feelings and events we experience?Avoiding the reality of a situation can be more harmful than whatever painful feelings are wrapped up in it, says ONeill. It may feel more comfortable to pull away from the hard things, but what happens in reality is that the more you distance yourself, the deeper you plunge - usually without even knowing it.In other words, the more entrenched you get in denial, the harder it can be to pull yourself from it, says ONeill.People who live in a state of denial will experience short-term consequences like feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness. Long-term consequences can include the feeling that you have never worked through your experience, and you may end up feeling perpetually stuck in it, ONeill explains. How To Conquer DenialIts pretty clear that denial is not a good place to remain, and that it should be avoided whenever possible. The problem is, because of the nature of denial and how prevalent it is, you may not even be aware that you are experiencing itIts the ultimate Catch-22. How can you stop being in denial if you dont know that you are in denial in the first place?Usually its someone outside your life who can point out that you are in a place of denial. It might be a friend or atherapistwho points out the ways in which youre using denial to cope with a situation, says ONeill. It goes without saying, if you are unable to cope with your feelings about an experience, finding a therapist you can trust is an excellent place for you to start.Confiding in close friends or family membersis helpful as well.Denial self-checksAdditionally, ONeill suggests that you can do a periodic self-checks with yourself to see if denial is getting the better of you. This can include asking yourself questions likeDo you spend a lot of time wishing the situation hadnt happened or had turned out differently?Do you find yourself refusing to accept a circumstance even through the circumstance is in fact a reality? If the answer to either or both of these questions is affirmative, ONeill suggest that this is a time where you should consider exploring the ways that your state of denial may be impacting your life or ability to recover.Living in Denial Doesnt Have to be PermanentIf the circumstances that led you to denial are particularly traumatizing, you should certainly consider seeking professional help. However you work through this, be gentle with yourself.Remember that as hard as it will be, it will be freeing and healing to unearth the buried feelings. And you will end up feeling better and stronger in the long-run.This article was originally published on Talkspace.

Milbank@Harvard Offers Mid-level Associates Ivy League Professional Development
MilbankHarvard Offers Mid-level Associates Ivy League Professional DevelopmentMilbankHarvard Offers Mid-level Associates Ivy League Professional DevelopmentThroughout the year, Milbank whisks mid-level associates away from their desks around the world and sends them to Cambridge, Mass. for a one-of-a-kind, intensive professional development program, MilbankHarvard. Every associate completes a week-long module once a year over the curse of four years, with sessions led by top Harvard Business and Law School faculty, alongside Milbank partners.Recently, partner David Wolfson, who helped develop and manages the program, sat down with recent MilbankHarvard graduate Anna Thomander, a senior associate in London who has recently completed the four-year program, and Laura Larsen, a New York-based fourth-year associate, to talk about the program. From Left,David Wolfson,Anna Thomander, andLaura Larsen.David Laura, you recently finished your first MilbankHarvard module. How did it meet your exp ectations so far?Laura Id say it has honigwein and surpassed my expectations. As an associate, you spend a few years hearing the buzz about the program from others going through it, but its hard to describe beyond that its awesome or wonderful. One of the things that I didnt necessarily expect going in was the mix of topics we covered hard business and managerial skills, and then career-planning, marketing and business development, understanding your value and the value of the firm. Learning about macroeconomics in-depth from Harvard professors is wonderful, but thats only a part of it. Personally and professionally, the program also gives each associate a chance to self-reflect and to grow. I think thats all part of the magic of the program that becomes clearer when you experience it yourself.Anna I agree, and from what Ive heard from colleagues, Im not alone in thinking that MilbankHarvard is the best professional education experience Ive had in my career. I havent heard of anythi ng like it at other firms, especially geared toward mid-levels. You hear about programs for first-years or new partners, but not at this level.David Im obviously biased, but I think the key reason why this program is so good is that we dont begin until people have been practicing for three or four years then it develops with them through their seventh or eighth years.Laura Yes, I had done a lot of MBA-oriented courses while in law school, but even the refresher business courses at Harvard were much more valuable to me now that I can apply them in context. Im at a point in my career where Im getting more involved in the harder pieces of deals, where there are problems that you have to actually solve and advise clients on rather than just taking the solutions and turning them into effective legal documentation, which you spend a lot of your first couple of years doingAnna Many of the lessons can be very concretely applied to our day-to-day work with clients. Im a restructuring lawyer . We did a session on valuations, which tends to be an issue more in restructurings in the U.S. than here in London, but that was really interesting, directly relevant to what I do. And I found the sessions where we looked at where things went wrong like case studies on Enron, Jrme Kerviel, and General Motors, extremely thought-provoking they helped me reflect on the reasons things go wrong in business, allocating responsibility, and ethics. On top of that, theres much more thats a lot more subtle, like learning how to assess and work with different personality types.Laura That has been valuable for me as well learning how to communicate across various personality types in a group, and how people approach problems differently. I remember very vividly a class in which we had to survive in the Alaskan wilderness following a plane crash. Youve been stranded, you have a list of supplies available to you, and you have to survive. And I remember that class in large part because we all di ed.Anna My group all died, too, LauraDavid Yes, I can tell you that everyone always dies in that session LaughterLaura But thats the lesson, right? We learned that you have to think about the prejudices you have approaching situations, why you think you know more than you do, how to be aware of your own blind spots, and to value other peoples knowledge. These types of classes also help people to bond, network and talk across the offices and across the cultures that we come from they also taught me a lot about myself.Another big takeaway was the focus on marketing, learning about the firm as a business. They help make you aware as an associate of the need to build a personal brand, to understand the brand of your practice group and your firm. It makes this whole exercise of practicing together more productive and cohesive.David You know, as we developed the program we were thinking that we might need to tailor sessions or break off groups to cater separately to our lawyers who do tr ansactional work and our litigation and financial restructuring lawyers. But once we fell into it, we realized that it does not matter which practice area youre in, its all relevant, pretty much, to everybody.Laura Its actually helpful to look at issues from the perspective of someone in a different practice.David Its interesting, here we have Laura, a young lawyer in New York working in leveraged finance, and Anna, a more senior lawyer in London in restructuring, and theyve had the same training, on numerous levels, in terms of leadership and feedback and various skills, and in each of their class groups they know everyone in the firm worldwide as a result of this. Im very confident that if theyre ever working on the same deal, they would approach things quite similarly, or would at least have a way to communicate, because of this common experience. And so I think the program has had a really significant impact on our culture. This wasnt something we initially focused on, as we wer e focused on excellent training and so on. But I think its one of the most profound things that have come out of it.Anna Having come in as a lateral, the opportunity to spend time with peers from our different offices, as well as partners from all over, and to absorb the culture in this way, was really valuable. Beyond that, its a great thing to have on your C.V. I get asked about my Harvard experience all the time. To be able to spend time learning from top professors at Harvard for four weeks has just been a phenomenal privilege.David Harvards executive team is fantastic. One of the reasons Harvard got into this is it wanted to understand what it should be doing in law schools to teach people who actually practice, to have interactions with young lawyers and learn what they find interesting and effective. So were pleased that theyve found it valuable as well we could not have asked for a better partner. This is a sponsored blog post fromMilbank, Tweed, Hadley McCloy LLP. You need to be careful when choosing a location to conduct your video interview. The background should be a plain color, with no busy patterns that be visually displeasing or distracting for the interviewer. The location needs to be a quiet place, free from background noise and any potential distractions. Remove your pet or your children from the room and never choose a public place like a coffee shop as that will produce a substantial amount of background noise. Source giphy.comMake koranvers to check the lighting ahead of time and stay away from windows that might create harsh shadows. You want to showcase yourself in the best way possible, and that includes making sure that you appear visible on the camera and that your body is framed correctly, with your shoulders in the frame. You dont want to look like a close-up face, so sit far enough away so that your upper body is visible. You can keep your resume and notes in front of you if you absolutely need them, but dont make it a habit of looking down or reviewing your notes constantly. The key to the video interview is developing a personal connection with the person on the other side and showing how you are the best person for the job, which all starts with the right location.2) Prepare Your EquipmentPerhaps the most important thing about a video interview is making sure that your equipment is working correctly. Theres nothing worse than getting d isconnected or having a spotty internet connection that doesnt allow the hiring manager to see or hear you correctly. Test your video and microphone before the interview, so you know everything is working. If possible, ask a friend to video chat with you using the platform you will be using for the interview. There are so many options today, from Google Hangouts to Skype, that offer video capabilities, so you want to ensure you have the proper account access and the software works before the interview. Generally, you will want to use an ethernet cord to guarantee that you will have a reliable internet connection throughout the interview. If you are using wi-fi, make sure other people in your residence are not using the internet for activities like streaming television or doing other activities that require a high internet connection. Close all open web browsers that might be using the wi-fi, so they dont cause distractions or affect your connection. If the lighting is terrible in th e location you choose, you will want to position a few lamps beside your computer so that the hiring manager can clearly see your face. Ensuring your equipment is working is a critical step in acing your video interview.3) Conduct Yourself Like Youre In-PersonEven though its a video interview, you need to treat it like an in-person interview. Youll want to dress appropriately for the position you are seeking. If the office you will be working in values professional attire, you should wear a suit for the video interview. You might be tempted to wear something comfortable like sweatpants on your bottom half since the interviewer will never see that part of you. You want to avoid this and dress completely. When you have a full outfit on, you will act more professional than you might if youre wearing casual clothing. Watch the interviewer for any visual cu es they are sending you. Feed off their energy and express your enthusiasm for the position as if you were speaking to them in-person.Try to establish a connection with the person who is interviewing you. Now is the time, when you can see them, to showcase how articulate and professional you are to demonstrate that you are the best candidate for the position.4) Conquer Your Body LanguageDuring a video interview, the way you appear on the screen is very important. Be sure to sit up straight with both feet on the floor, so you look alert and professional. You might fidget when youre nervous, but its important to refrain from unterstellung activities as it will be distracting to the interviewer. Keep your hands on your lap or on your desk and dont shake or sway from side to side. One of the most significant things you can do during a video interview is to maintain eye contact. Youll probably want to stare at the screen or even glance at your appearance on the screen, but when you are t alking to the interviewer, you should be looking directly at them. It might feel odd at first, but you need to look directly at the camera while you are speaking to your interviewer, so they see that youre looking directly at them. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, practice talking to the camera in advance of your interview, so you are more at ease. Its equally as important to smile and remain personable throughout the meeting. Dont scare them off by smiling constantly, but act like you would in person and express your passion for the position you are seeking.5) End StrongThe way you end the video interview will set the stage for the next steps, so make sure you end on a high note. If you dont have the interviewers email address, ask for it now so you can send a thank you note. Then follow up after the interview, not immediately but a few hours later, to thank them again for their time, recap any high points of the discussion and restate your enthusiasm about taking the intervie w process to the next step.Video interviews can be overwhelming at first, but with these tips, youll be armed with the tools you need to ace the interview and get one step closer to securing the position of your dreams.

6 ways to be an all-star in every meeting
6 ways to be an all-star in every meeting 6 ways to be an all-star in every meeting Can you believe that this meeting has been dragging on for an hour and a half, and we still have so much ground to cover? Why is he talking over me again? If I ask this question, am I going to sound like I donât belong here? If these questions have ever flooded your mind during a meeting, youâre surely not alone. At one time or another, we have all doubted the course of human progress while being forced to watch one more Power Point presentation. So hereâs how to be a team player and conduct successful meetings- whether youâre leading or sitting in on one.Respect your colleaguesâ timePeople donât have a lot of time to waste- especially at work. Meetings should have hard time limits.Neal Hartman writes about this in a Forbes article.âIf you have responsibility for running regular meetings and you have a reputation for being someone who starts and ends promptly, you will be amazed how many of your colleagues will make every effort to attend your meetings. People apprec iate it when you understand that their time is valuable. Another note on time: Do not schedule any meeting to last longer than an hour. Sixty minutes is generally the longest time workers can remain truly engaged,â Hartman writes.Fix the hidden power dynamic in your seatingVivian Giang features advice from Barbara Pachter, career coach and author of the book The Essentials of Business Etiquette: How to Greet, Eat, and Tweet Your Way to Success, in a Business Insider article.âIf itâs a sit-down meeting, you need to adjust your chair so that youâre at equal height with everyone else at the table. âSome people donât adjust their chairs, so they end up being the little kid in the meeting,â says Pachter,â Giang writes.Donât let that chatty coworker dominate the discussionMeetings are everyoneâs time to shine, but inevitably one or two people will try to derail any gathering of people to focus on themselves.Les McKeown provides strategies to âchange the behaviorsâ of employees who talk too much during meetings in an Inc. article.âOnce theyâve run out of steam, itâs essential not to respond to everything your canât-stop-talking colleague has said. No matter how contentious, annoying or downright wrong much of what they said may be, restrict yourself only to any comments that were (a) relevant to them topic under discussion, and (b) helpful in moving the discussion forward. If there were no such comments (not uncommon experience with blowhards), then simply thank them for their comments and move on- again, with a neutral emotive expression,â McKeown writes. If you suspect you might be that chatty coworker, try to understand that every word you say comes at the expense of several other peopleâs time. Before you bring up a point, determine whether your point helps the decision-making process in the room. If it doesnât, save it until afterwards.Minimize distractionsYes, it would be so much more fun to scroll through Facebook or Twitte r right now- or even those incoming texts- but try to give your undivided attention to who is leading the meeting and to what your colleagues are saying. If theyâre listening to you, theyâll expect you to listen to them. Paying attention to people can be a powerful signal that you actually care what they think, and theyâll remember it.It will be also be easier to participate if you know what your colleagues are talking about.Another thing to watch out for: if you want to look engaged and impressive in a meeting, donât face a window or other fascinating visual aspect of the room, like a mesmerizing painting. Your eye will be drawn there, which will make it look youâre spacing out.In addition, we hate to tell you this, but: everyone can see you doodling. Use paper only for your notes, not to show people that stick figures are more interesting than their ideas.Prepare and donât be afraid to speak up earlyIntroverts should know their stuff and share it at the beginning of the meeting.Dana Rousmaniere features advice from Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Canât Stop Talking and co-founder of The Quiet Leadership Institute, in a Harvard Business Review article. For this interview question, Rousmaniere asked Cain how introverts can âavoid coming across as disengaged or even apathetic during a meeting, when theyâre actually very deeply in thought.ââOne thing I often tell introverts is to do a lot of prep work before a meeting begins, whether or not youâve been formally asked to do so, because itâs probably what you need to personally do. Preparing your thoughts ahead of time can also help give you a push to be one of the first people to speak up, which is probably not your normal style. In general, itâs best to advance your ideas early. On a psychological level, it helps you feel a part of the meeting earlier, and people will often in turn direct their comments to you, whereas if you wait awhile to speak, the opposite usually happens,â Cain told the publication.Be sure to balance your input with othersâ and share valuable contributions, and bask in the new respect youâll have.

Using Personality Tests To Find The Right Job For You
Using Personality Tests To Find The Right Job For You Using Personality Tests To Find The Right Job For You Taking a personality test could be the first step to finding your dream career.Gone are the days when doctors and engineers monopolized the job industry. Young professionals today have an abundance of lucrative opportunities to choose from to fit every personality type. And with the number of available jobs at the highest itâs been in 15 years, thereâs never been a better time to find your ideal career!Unfortunately, itâs not always as easily done as said. If finding a job is one part of the challenge, the other, often more challenging part is finding the right new job. Most young professionals have no idea what type of work they wish to pursue- which explains why so many end up working in fields theyâre the least interested in.So how do you find a job that best suits your personality? Simple: take a personality test.Taking a personality test is the best way to determine your personality type, skills, values and interests. Fortunately, there are a myriad of online services a nd mobile apps like the Good.co â" Workplace Culture Fit app that offer free and premium personality tests and career recommendations.Eager to learn more? Here are four tests that can help you determine your ideal career based on your personality.Aptitude TestAptitude tests assess a personâs comprehension of a specific skill or field of knowledge. These tests are typically multiple choice format and administered by employers to filter candidates for different positions. Job seekers can also use these tests as a self-assessment to filter careers that are and are not right for them. Aptitude tests are available for almost all subjects and industries, ranging from sales and marketing to tests for firefighters.Career TestsCareer tests typically consist of a series of questions regarding oneâs interests, values and skills and determine possible career options based on your personality and capabilities. Formats range from quick, multiple choice online questionnaires to more professi onal and extensive examinations issued by career service centers or career counselors.IQ TestsIntelligence Quotient (IQ) tests are probably the most popular type of personality test and are designed to measure a personâs intelligence and mental comprehension. IQ test are typically administered by licensed psychologist and access a subjectâs knowledge on topics such as mathematical abilities, language skills, memory, reasoning skills, and information-processing speed.IQ tests are measured by dividing a personâs mental age by his/her actual age and then multiplying it by a hundred. Taking an IQ test before you begin your job search will help you eliminate jobs above and below your level of intelligence (you donât want to be bored by a job thatâs too easy for you or overwhelmed by a position thatâs over your head).Psychological Test Psychological tests measure a personâs emotional makeup, personal characteristics and overall stability. Knowing your psychological health be fore beginning your job search will help you determine what type of work would put you in the best position for success and overall workplace satisfaction.Although there are many online psychological tests, it is highly recommended that you seek help from a qualified counselor if youâre interested in a psychological evaluation. However, there is no harm in using online psychological tests to get a feel for what type of personality you are. Most of these tests are not serious examinations that you need to prepare for and can be taken at your own convenience. Personality tests do not offer definite answers on what you should be doing with your life; they are simply tools to help you with your overall career planning. The more you know about yourself, the better chance youâll have of finding a career that perfectly fits your unique personality!

How understanding conversation styles can make you successful
How understanding conversation styles can make you successful How understanding conversation styles can make you successful Though no two peopleâs conversational styles are exactly alike, there are patterns that tend to characterize styles.Expecting shorter pauses between turns, and perceiving long pauses as uncomfortable silences, tends to go along with other linguistic habits that together make up what I call high-involvement style.Expecting longer pauses and being more comfortable with silence are among the linguistic habits that make up what I call high-considerateness style.Think about it this way: we all want to be considerate, and we all want to show that weâre involved in a conversation, but speakers of one style tend to place more emphasis on showing involvement, while speakers of the other style tend to emphasize showing considerateness.Letâs consider a hypothetical conversation between two friends, Tammy and Carolyn. If Carolyn is telling a story and Tammy encourages her with âyeah,â âuh-huhâ and âright,â Carolyn probably will assume thatâs listener talk, and wonât feel in terrupted. But what if Tammy says whole sentences like âI know what you mean; the same thing happened to me.â That could feel like listener talk, too - or like an attempt to grab the floor and start telling her own story. And how about if Tammy meant it as listener talk and Carolyn takes it as an attempt to steal the floor? Carolyn might stop talking, thinking she was interrupted, and Tammy might start her own turn, interpreting Carolynâs silence to mean she was finished. Who created that interruption? Tammy, because she began speaking? Or Carolyn, because she stopped? Iâd say neither created the interruption single-handedly. It resulted from the differences in their conversational styles.By filling a pause that threatened to become an uncomfortable silence, Tammy was showing enthusiastic listenership, as high-involvement style requires: a good person makes sure to show sheâs involved. By expecting a listener to be relatively wordless, Carolyn was exercising a high-conside rateness style: a good person makes sure to leave plenty of room for others to talk.Linguistic habits that go along with high-considerateness style also include standing farther apart (in other words, giving more physical as well as verbal space); speaking more softly and with relatively level pitch and minimal gestures; talking more about impersonal topics and less about personal ones; being relatively indirect about conveying something negative or getting your way; and not asking personal questions.Linguistic habits that go along with high-involvement style include expecting shorter pauses between turns - or maybe no pause at all: to avoid an uncomfortable silence, a speaker signals sheâs ready to relinquish the floor by winding down, expecting a listener to chime in before she comes to a complete stop. It also includes standing closer when you talk; speaking in a more animated way and often more loudly; telling more personal stories and making the point of the story relatively dramatic; being more relatively direct; and asking personal questions to show interest and caring.Differences in habits and assumptions about any of these ways of talking can lead to frustration, even between good friends, because the same way of speaking can have different meanings. Being quiet while listening really can mean youâre not interested - and so can starting to speak before your friendâs finished. For example, Ruth and Alice were taking a walk by a lake, a lovely setting replete with the beauties of flora and fauna. Alice was telling Ruth about something going on in her life, and Ruth was listening with attention and empathy. But Ruth was also enjoying the natural surroundings, and the pleasure of sharing them with her friend. So whenever they passed a particularly pretty or interesting sight - a duck gliding on the surface of the lake with a string of tiny ducklings behind her, or a patch of flowers with extraordinary color - Ruth pointed it out.Suddenly Alice burst out: âYou havenât listened to a word Iâve said!â Ruth was stunned - and stung. Of course sheâd been listening. Calling attention to things she thought Alice would want to take notice of did not mean she wasnât. If she didnât point them out while Alice was talking, her friend might miss them: by the time her story was over, the thing of interest would be long gone. For Ruth, sharing the beauty of their surroundings was a show of involvement just as surely as was listening to her friendâs story. Quick comments about something in the environment are not really interruptions, just as a dinner guest might murmur a request to pass the salt without interrupting another dinner guestâs long story. In both cases, the remarks are obviously fleeting parenthetical asides. But hereâs where conversational style differences wreak havoc: in Aliceâs high-considerateness style, listening means not talking; anyone who is talking is not listening. If that means a listener must forego sharing the beauty of a passing sight - or salt on her food - itâs a price she has to pay. Both friends have had a lifetime of evidence that their own conversational styles make sense, because members of their families and the people they grew up with shared them.We learn conversational styles at the same time that we learn language, as children growing up, so experience tells us that the way we show good intentions is the right way, and those who play by other rules are wrong.Actually, we rarely realize they are playing by other rules; we think theyâre breaking rules. (The title of Haru Yamadaâs book about communication between Japanese and Americans, Different Games, Different Rules, can also apply to communication between people who speak the same language but have different conversational styles.)Of course a listener should be quiet! Thatâs the definition of listening. Of course a listener should talk along to show enthusiasm and involvement! Otherwise how do y ou know sheâs paying attention? Both styles make sense, each in its own way.A good listener can emphasize considerateness by being silent, even if it means forgoing observations that she thinks the speaker would appreciate; and a good listener can emphasize involvement at the same time that sheâs listening - by talking.Talking across styles is all the more difficult because each style fosters its own capabilities. If youâre used to hearing listeners talk while youâre speaking, it doesnât distract you; it encourages you.But if youâre used to listeners being quiet, it does: you canât keep your focus if someone whoâs supposed to be listening keeps talking. Itâs hard to believe that what wouldnât distract you might distract someone else, or that someone else - especially a friend - wouldnât be distracted by what distracts you.Conversational style differences cast doubt on the adage âDo unto others as you would have others do unto you.â If your conversational styles differ, what you would have others do unto you may be the very thing that bugs them when you do it unto them.Excerpted from YOUâRE THE ONLY ONE I CAN TELL by Deborah Tannen. Facebook accused of allowing job posts that excluded women
Facebook accused of allowing job posts that excluded women Facebook accused of allowing job posts that excluded women Facebookâs advertising platform allows employers to target the companyâs two billion active users with tailored job ads. But that can come at a cost of job seekers not seeing the ad, a new complaint alleges. On Tuesday, the American Civil Liberties Union filed charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against Facebook and 10 other employers, including a moving company and a police department, for unlawfully excluding women and non-binary people from seeing job ads. Under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is illegal to discriminate based on gender. The ACLU alleges that the social media giant allowed advertisers to create âmale-targeted adsâ that excluded women from seeing them, denying them âinformation on job opportunities.â According to the filing, for example, one of the ads for JK Moving allegedly targeted men age 21 to 55 who live or were recently in Maryland. The charges were filed on behalf of three women and seeks to represent the âmillionsâ of Fa cebook users who may have also been similarly excluded.âI was shocked to find that this discrimination is still happening, just online instead of in newspapers,â Bobbi Spees, the lead complainant, told the ACLU in a statement. âI shouldnât be shut out of the chance to hear about a job opportunity just because I am a woman,â Spees told the New York Times that she was using Facebook in her job hunt with little success for jobs other than home and health; meanwhile, her husband was getting leads for high-paying manual jobs through the social network. The ACLU complaint argues that Facebook is not just a middleman for jobs, but acts as an employment agency and is therefore liable for the discriminatory targeting. âSocial media has become a primary means for big and small employers to identify, recruit, and hire workers, particularly through the use of targeted ads,â the complaint states. The complaint details how employers can target job ads based on âmale onlyâ or âf emale onlyâ options that Facebook gives. âFacebook has consciously retained the gender targeting tool and deployed it to send employment ads that excluded non-male users from receiving the ads,â the complaint reads. Not the first time Facebookâs job ads have caused controversyFacebookâs ability to target job ads keeps getting the social media company into legal trouble. In December, ProPublica and The New York Times reported that Facebook recruitment ads were excluding older job seekers from seeing them. Then, Facebook defended itself, saying that ad targeting based on age was âan accepted industry practice.â Now, faced with another ad-targeting controversy, Facebook said it would review the complaint.âThere is no place for discrimination on Facebook; itâs strictly prohibited in our policies,â Facebook spokesperson Joe Osborne said in a statement. âWe look forward to defending our practices once we have an opportunity to review the complaint.â

How to Get a Job as a Computer Programmer
How to Get a Job as a Computer Programmer How to Get a Job as a Computer Programmer Are you interested in a career as a computer programmer? Heres the scoop on what you need to get started including education and experience requirements, where to find job listings, and tips for acing an interview. Education and Training Requirements for Programmers Most computer programmers have a bachelors degree with a major or concentration of coursework in computer science or information technology. Some programmers earn an associates degree in a computer-related discipline. A few programmers may only have a high school degree, but in these cases, they have accomplished a significant amount of programming work. Programmers can earn certifications from software companies or product vendors to demonstrate proficiency in various computer languages or programming on certain platforms. Computer programmers need strong analytical skills to generate the code to automate complex processes. They must be able to interview clients or end users to determine their technology needs and communicate options for programs in a language that non-technical users can easily comprehend. Problem-solving skills are required to troubleshoot issues when programs dont function optimally. Programmers must be detail oriented and precise to create code to exact specifications or find minor problems in long streams of code. High school and college students aiming for programming jobs should consider creating applications for digital devices as a way to demonstrate their programming acumen and creativity. Most high schools now offer programming courses which can be an excellent testing ground for aspiring programmers. Research the programming languages and skills in highest demand by searching Google with phrases like best computer programming skills or most important computer programming skills. Write programs that showcase these skills with the help of online tutorials, books, and courses. How to Find a Job as a Computer Programmer Candidates who can show prospective employers actual programs which they have created will have the easiest time landing jobs. Programmers should create a web-based portfolio of their programming projects which can be easily shared with employers and networking contacts. Obtain alumni contacts through your career office or from your faculty. Reconnect with previous employers where you worked as an intern or even as a basic service employee, and ask for introductions to computer professionals whom they know. Reach out to family friends and Facebook contacts and ask for referrals to the computer types whom they know. Approach these contacts to schedule meetings to get some feedback about your portfolio and advice about your job search. These informational interviews will give your contacts a chance to gain an appreciation for your skills and can often lead to referrals for job interviews. Utilize specialized IT websites like Dice.com to generate a list of job leads. Search job sites like Indeed.com, Simplyhired.com, and LinkUp.com by keywords like programmer or computer programmer and by your favorite computer languages to expand your list of job targets. If youre a college student or graduate, check with your career office for job listings and recruiting opportunities. Check out IT job fairs, like UNCUBED, which focuses on jobs at startups, in your preferred locations for employment. Dream a little. Generate a list of your ideal IT employers, visit their jobs websites and apply for jobs. Review lists like Forbes Best Companies to Work For to generate some ideas. Interviewing for Programmer Jobs Interviews for programmers tend to be quite different from the standard interview process. Interviewers will ask typical behavioral questions to determine if candidates can reference examples of problem-solving, troubleshooting, communication with clients, and users and tolerance for frustration. Recruiters will also test the technical knowledge of candidates by asking them to explain and define programming terms and processes. Some interviewers will pose hypothetical problem-solving questions which will test the thought processes of candidates. For example, you might be asked to figure out how many cars pass over the George Washington Bridge on a typical day. Employers will be interested in your logical reasoning skills rather than a right answer. You may be asked to create a sample program using pseudo code to solve a hypothetical problem on a whiteboard. Employers will be looking for you to demonstrate a logical approach to programming. Your emphasis should be on your process and how you explain your method. Interviewers sometimes ask programming candidates to review the code for a program to identify and correct any errors. Check Company Websites Many large tech companies have interviewing advice specific to their company available online. For example, Google has a Hangout on Air where Googlers talk about how they interview candidates at Google and share advice on the best way to prepare for a technical interview. Amazon has a list of FAQs including information on the interview process, what to wear, and what you will need to provide. Follow Up After the Interview Effective follow up after your job interview is critical. Compose a thank you email immediately after the interview and clearly convey your enthusiasm for the job and why you think it is an excellent fit, as well as your gratitude for the opportunity to interview.

Substantial amendments were made to the document two years ago and an updated version, Directive 2014/68/EU, was issued in May 2014. The Using ASME Codes to Meet the EU PED MasterClass, which will take place March 17 and 18, will provide an in-depth review of the PED, recent changes, and how the use of ASME Codes can satisfy the PED requirements for design and manufacture of pressure equipment. The course, which will be presented by ASME-authorized inspection supervisor and team leader Peter Hanmore, will encompass practical demonstrations for the assessment of hazards and risks and the preparation of particular material appraisals (PMAs) and the technical and quality system documentations to meet the optional quality system requirements. Hanmore has been authorized by ASME and the National Board for the assessment of manufacturers of pressure equipment and safety relief devices. Three other MasterClasses will be presented in Copenhagen along with the PED course: Design by Analysis Requirements in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 2 â" Alternative Rules on March 14 and 15, Techniques and Methods used in API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 for Advanced Fitness-For-Service (FFS) Assessments on March 16, and Bases and Application of Heat Exchanger Mechanical Design Rules in Section VIII of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code on March 17 and 18.
